Volunteering

There are several ways you can volunteer your time and help at African Village Support.

Your Time

Most of the work we undertake at AVS is in the villages of Eastern Uganda. As you will read throughout our web site we are constantly building, updating and maintaining and additional help is always needed. Over the years we have had several volunteers who make the trip out to Uganda and join our team on the ground. In return we can give you food, shelter, lighting and a warm welcome. We ask that all overseas volunteers raise their airfare and a donation to the charity through fund raising activities.

Fundraising

This is the most important aspect of running our charity. None of what we have achieved could have been done without the voluntary donations made by people like you. There are many ways you can help us fundraise from baking and selling cakes to bike riding from John O’Groats to Lands End.

Ambassador Program

You will probably already be a supporter of AVS and want to help take us to the next stage in our efforts to be more sustainable. Having a network of contacts and/or a connection with Africa will certainly help. Our Ambassadors will be given full support and training to be able to;
  • Engaging in speaking slots at local schools, churches, social clubs to widen the AVS story
  • Introducing AVS to a teacher or school to join with their charity programme
  • Helping source auction and raffle items for events
  • Taking part in an AVS event committee and organising other fundraising events for AVS
  • Finding at least one other person/group who can sponsor a student

Temporary AVS Ug Director Role

Job description: Responsible for overseeing and leading the work of the employees and volunteers of AVS Uganda, including planning, directing and overseeing the operations and fiscal health of the organisation.

Responsible to:The Executive Committee in Uganda and the trustees in the UK.

Contract: Temporary contract is for a X months period.

Subsistence allowance: TBA

Main management responsibilities will include:

  • An ability to ensure that the day to day management, organisation and administration is carried out through careful planning at all levels.
  • A good understanding of financial management (budgeting), ensuring accountability for the deployment of financial and human resources within the ethical framework of a charity based organisation, minimising waste on administrative costs and ensuring that maximum funds are used to support the vulnerable and needy within the community. The current format for recording all financial transactions and budgeting for projects is pieces of paper and guess work.
  • Work effectively with the Ugandan Executive Committee and UK Trustees, supporting the Ugandan Executive Committee in strengthening their ability to plan and priorities projects for approval and monitor and evaluate the performance of AVS Uganda.
  •  Strong people skills and an ability to secure the commitment of staff to the organisation, supporting them through a period of change. All the staff would hate to lose their roles, they have been given a life line and work in good conditions and are well looked after so its more about making sure they are motivated and committed to doing the best they can for AVS.
  • An ability to develop staff skills through the provision of training, coaching and mentoring, ensuring that they have the skills and knowledge to carry out their roles effectively.
  • An ability to ensure the health and safety of employees and all those for whom AVS is responsible (e.g. Girls in the Hostel). This is more about making sure the hostel is secure, the girls have food (maze) and someone to cook it for them and that they look after themselves whilst being supported by the matron.
  • A willingness to develop an understanding of Ugandan culture and to live and work within the constraints a developing country.
  •  An ability to be adaptable, maintain a sense of perspective and humour and also have a great deal of common sense.
