What we do

Our aim is to help improve the quality of life of both adults and children. Working as a humanitarian, community based organisation, we have delivered a number of sustainable community projects including the building of a school hostel for girls and a large community centre, supporting over 20 women's groups and more than 50 students educated along with livelihood projects for young people.

Our office and community centre are located in Muyembe and we support many families and individuals from surrounding villages, all part of the Bulambuli district of Eastern Uganda.

For the past two years we have been incredibly lucky to have supporters of AVS run the Ugandan Marathon and raise funds for AVS. The marathon has been featured in The Guardian, BBC, Bloomberg, Runners World and the London Evening Standard. The Ugandan Marathon recently won "Best International Event" at the UK Running Awards and Red Bull named it one of the "9 Best Marathons in the World" in 2018. Doug Wright, Madeline Lewis, Alan Buckley, Stephanie Reyes and Suzie Fullagar (one of our Trustees) have set up JustGiving pages should you want to donate and help motivate our runners to do their best on behalf of AVS. Naomi Lumutenga has recently returned from a visit to Muyembe and returned with an update on our porgrammes and operations. We are pleased to report that on the whole we maintain to run our projects as per our plan and budgets. Our Mama Bag project continues to be very popular with pregnant women coming from near and far to receive health talks from the local midwives and to receive their bag of goodies in preparation for their new borns. Equipment for the recreation room at the girls hostel has also been delivered and we are delighted to confirm the girls are using it and receiving extra tuition from a local school teacher.

During an Executive Board meeting Naomi was able to meet with the newly appointed members, all upstanding and well respected members of the local community who are excited to be involved with the work we do and bring their own knowledge and experience to the team.

Bulambuli is a deprived rural area of eastern Uganda where Muyembe is situated and where AVS has their central base. Some 80% of its population (total around 150,000) are subsistence farmers who live beneath the poverty line. We have identified that there is a need to address School Drop-Outs, and Unemployed Youths living within the villages of Bulambuli District, with a Vocational Training Scheme.
The programme plans to enhance the employability of 100 recent school drop-outs (aged 16-22) and unemployed youths (22-30) – both male and female, within the first one year period. For more information on our work in this area click here.
